Sale of Posed Lincoln

I learned yesterday from my gallery in Calistoga that my overpainted photo of Abraham Lincoln sold. Scott Sofie, gallery co-owner, was moved to tears by this piece. He was holding onto it at his desk but someone saw it and bought it! Lincoln was so tired by the time this picture was taken. The civil war weighed heavily on this man.

My painting over the photograph in the public domain, is minimal. After underpainting the photograph with acrlylic medium I added a few colors and then stopped. It spoke to me at that point so I left it. This was accepted into a show in 2021 in Norfolk, Virginia called Tribute at D'Art Center. It is a small work. Only 10” x 8”.

We are all connected. What moves me about Lincoln is probably what moves most people. The union held after much bloodshed and slavery was abolished. But reconstruction didn’t happen. Racism continued with Jim Crow laws in the south with lynchings and racism. Our hearts hurt knowing the injustice that continues. Lincoln inspired us to listen to our better angels. I hope we do.
